DECEMBER 08 KOREAN FILM FESTIVAL LEADS WITH “THE CROSSING” KOREA’S NOMINATION FOR ACADEMY AWARDS
Korean film has recently received much international recognition, and we have seen a visible trend of Korean filmmakers producing films of international interest. New Zealanders will have the chance to experience again a broad cross section of the best of Korean Film at the 2008 Korean Film Festival coming to Auckland, Wellington over the weekend of 12-15 December.
The Opening Film for the Festival film is the moving drama “Crossing” has also been selected as the Korean submission for Best Foreign Language Film at next year’s Academy Awards. The film is based on the true story of 25 North Korean refugees who stormed through the gates of the Spanish Embassy in Beijing in 2002. Directed by Kim Tae-gyoon and starring Cha In-pyo the human drama focuses on a North Korean father and son who individually cross over into China but struggle to find each other.

The 2008 Korean Film Festival follows on from a highly successful 2004 and 2006 Korean Film Festivals, and this year the Korean Film festival will screen in:
· AUCKLAND: (12-14 December), Rialto Newmarket
· WELLINGTON (13-14 December), Lighthouse Cinema Petone
“The 2008 Korean Film Festival is an exciting opportunity to show case the best of current Korean Film across a wide range of genres, and this year we are also priviledged to be able to add to the Festival programme the winning short films from the 2008 Seoul International Film Festival, which give incisive insights into contemporary Korean family life. The Festival is also a great chance to continue the growing links and creative partnership between New Zealand and Korean film makers following the recent signing of Korea New Zealand Film Coproduction Treaty.”
